Title: Product forms and G-Networks: Discovery or Invention?

Abstract: Many stochastic networks have been shown to satisfy product form, including the well known Jackson networks which since the late 60's have been used to model packet networks, and the subsequent BCMP networks. In this talk we will first provide an abstract definition of product form in stochastic networks, and then discuss G-Networks that were first inspired by neuronal networks and which have given rise to many interesting developments. In particular we will discuss their non-linear flow equations, the existence and uniqueness of stationary solutions, function approximation capabilities of these models, a number of applications, and generalisations.

Brief Bio: Erol Gelenbe is the Professor in the Dennis Gabor Chair at Imperial College. He is a Fellow of IEEE and ACM, and won the ACM SIGMETRICS Award in 2008 for his work on computer and network performance modeling and analysis. He has just been elected a Foreign Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. A native of Turkey, he is a Member of the French National Academy of Engineering (Academie des Technologies) and of the Turkish Academy of Sciences. He has also been recognised with governmental honours from France and Italy, and Honoris Causa doctorates from the University of Liege (Belgium), the University of Roma II (Italy), and Bogazici University (Istanbul, Turkey). Erol's research is currently funded by EPSRC and the EU FP7 Programme. He also serves as the Editor-in-Chief of The Computer Journal (British Computer Society).





Prof. Nikolaos Avouris

Brief Bio:  Professor of Software Technology at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the University of Patras.
Leader of the Human-Computer Interaction group, over 25 years experience in interactive systems design and evaluation. 
Key researcher in many national and international funded research projects in the frame of IST, ESPRIT, Environment, PENED, YPER etc. 
Chief designer of tools for collaborative learning and usability studies: Synergo, ModellingSpace, ActivityLens, etc.
Editor of two international volumes and author of over 100 scientific papers and technical reports in the above research areas.
Editorial Board of Int. J. on Artificial Intelligence Tools, Int. J. of Mobile Human Computer Interaction. 
Member of the Technical Chamber of Greece (1979), Greek Electrical Engineers Association (1979), Greek Computer Society (1992), IEEE Computer Society (1995), founding member of the Greek Artificial Intelligence Association and Hellenic Associaton of Computer and Communication Technonologies in Education.

Brief Bio:  Full Professor, at Department of Information and Communication Engineering, Fukuoka Institute of Technology (FIT).
Dr. Barolli has published about 300 papers in referred Journals, Books and International Conference proceedings. He has served as a Guest Editor for many International Journals and has been a PC Member, PC Chair and General Chair of many International Conferences.
He is the Steering Committee Chair of CISIS International Conference and is serving as Steering Committee Co-Chair of IEEE AINA, NBiS, BWCCA and 3PGCIC International Conferences.
Dr. Barolli has won many Awards for his scientific work and has received many research funds. His research interests include network traffic control, fuzzy control, genetic algorithms, agent-based systems, ad-hoc networks and sensor networks. He is a member of IEEE, SOFT, and IPSJ.
